Let's Work Together!
Hey, I'm Kahja! I started Moonbeam Creative to help women-led small businesses get real results through impactful brand identities and stunning website design.
You know those brands you absolute OBSESS OVER?
You know what I’m talking about. Those products or services that keep you addicted and loyal to the point that it’s probably irrational, but you don’t care. They just live rent-free in your brain now.
I can name plenty of drool-worthy brands that keep people coming back for more:
Starbucks: Every time I walk into a Starbucks, there’s always a bunch of people camped out in corners with their laptops or maybe just a friend, and they’re just basking in the chill vibes and sipping their coffee. Self-proclaimed coffee snobs will tell you Starbucks coffee sucks. (I wouldn’t know. I don’t really drink coffee 😜) But Starbucks fans tell a different story. They love the vibe, the atmosphere, and hey, they seem to like the coffee, too! So why fool around with anything else?
Fashion Nova: What started as an Instagram clothing brand became a drop-dead gorgeous leader in trendy fashion. Cardi B doesn’t wear them for nothing! And I’ll be the first to tell you that I refuse to buy my jeans from anywhere else. Even if I see the exact same jeans at a different store. It makes absolutely no sense, but I’m not shopping for sense! I’m shopping for fashion greatness! 🤣
Pokemon: Yep, I’m about to take a trip into the 90’s to revisit my childhood. But there’s something about these cute little creatures that just keeps coming back despite it being decades old. Every time I think about Pokemon from the cards, to the games, to the movies, I’m filled with feelings of fun, adventure, and determination. And I don’t care how old you are, Pikachu is freaking cute!!!
All of these brands just have that something that makes so many of us feel connected and we can’t get enough of them.
I’ll go out on a limb and say I maaaay have some brand obsessions myself. I’m talking about:
David’s Tea: This tea brand single-handedly made me a super steeper. I mean, before discovering David’s Tea – never drank tea. After David’s Tea, I have like 20 different tea flavors in a special box in my kitchen just for David’s Tea…☕️☕️☕️☕️ Not only do I love all the creative flavors they create, but I love looking through their blog and social media just for tea-related tips and fun posts.
Fenty: Besides just having my perfect foundation shade, I’m always amazed by this brand’s commitment to inclusion and stocking makeup in ALL skin tones from the lightest light colors, to the deepest dark shades.
And we don’t just love these brands for the quality or the utility. Nope, that’s what separates the okay brands from the 20-flavors-because-I’m-hopelessly-addicted brands.
A brand that doesn’t quite create that obsession-worthy spark can range anywhere from “meh, it’s fine, I guess” to “desperately needs life support!”
The thing with okay brands is that there will ALWAYS be a sea of other okay brands that your clients DEFINITELY have their eye on. The best thing that distinguishes an okay brand from another okay brand is price. And that, my friend, is a race to the bottom. Can you say “discounts?” 😬
If you’re a female entrepreneur who looks at her business and thinks, “It’s okay for now, I guess” then it might be time to make some changes, because your clients are probably thinking the same thing.
And I KNOW that’s not you! You’re here! You’ve gotten this far in this blog article! That means you’re making an effort to be that self-aware, always learning, forever goal-getting business owner who’s always a step ahead of the competition. And you know it’s about time you got your potential clients from “meh” to “star-struck.” 🤩
If there’s one thing that can get your business from just another ho-hum brand, to powerfully magnetic, it’s stellar branding.
And here’s the secret sauce: The crave-worthy brands don’t just make you want to buy something. They make you want to BE something.
I drink David’s Tea because I want to BE fun and creative. It’s often on my desk while I’m working on designs for clients. I wear Fenty makeup because I want to FEEL connected to a world that acknowledges and celebrates our diversity as people.
And I’m here to tell you that this can be you!
Who cares if you’re not a billionaire makeup corporation, or a mega viral Instagram influencer?? You’re YOU. And you’re the only you there is. And guess what? Rare stuff like that is SERIOUSLY valuable. And there are sooo many people out there who need exactly the service that you offer. You just need to stand out so they can see you.
The first thing you need to do is nail down the “who, what, why, and how” of your business.
This is where you come in as the #1 expert on YOUR business. No one else knows the ins and outs of your service quite like you do.
Here’s what you need to know about the who, what, why, and how of your business so you can start your journey to becoming a crave-worthy brand:
Who is your service for?
I don’t mean something general like “women in their 20s.” Get specific.
Something more like “Busy, environmentally-conscious women who need someone to clean their home with all eco-friendly cleaning products so they can have a clean home guilt-free.”
What does your service do?
You’d be surprised how many people skip this part. 🤷🏾♀️ In the past, I’ve looked through pages and pages of a website just to realize that they never said anything along the lines of “I do XYZ.” No flowery words. Just plain and simple.
So I’m left confused because something so simple was left out! It doesn’t matter how much confidence or life-changing benefit your service will give me if I don’t know what you do! Are you a business coach? Counselor? Do you teach people a new skill? What do you do?! Don’t make your audience guess.
Why should people choose you?
And it has to be something more specific than “Because I’m awesome.” I’d bet all the money in the world that your competitors are saying they’re pretty great too, so you gotta dig deeper.
Here’s a tip: Try taking a look at some past ideal clients and figure out why they came to you.
If you’re a wedding planner, maybe it’s because they absolutely loved your out-of-this world floral arrangements that really made their ceremony feel like an actual trip to an island paradise. Or if you’re a photographer, maybe it’s because your unique personality has a really special way of putting people at ease so even clients who have never modeled before feel comfortable and confident enough to strike a pose.
How do you provide your service?
You might not think this is all that important, but it’s actually crucial! It ties into the “Why” that I spoke about above. Maybe your “How” is an excellent reason why people should book you.
It’s one thing to be a wedding planner. It’s another thing entirely to be a wedding planner who consults not only with her clients, but also her clients’ families to learn more about their family history so she can incorporate subtle touches of decor and memorable moments that add a nostalgic and personal flair to a beautiful ceremony.
Can every other business in your industry say they do it quite like you do? Let people know how YOUR journey from point A to point Fabulous is exactly the recipe they need to reach their goals, whatever they might be.
Once you’ve figured out your who, what, why, and how, that’s where I come in.
