Hey, I'm Kahja! I started Moonbeam Creative to help women-led small businesses get real results through impactful brand identities and stunning website design.
So you’re a business owner with no social media presence and you’re wondering: “How will social media even help me?”
You’re probably thinking:
Now sit down for a minute, because I’m gonna tell you something that’s gonna blow your mind.
You’re wrong. 🤭
First of all, social media is an EXCELLENT way to reach millions of potential customers for your business! Think about this:
If your business is just collecting dust online, it might be because you haven’t told enough people about it. Nobody knows what they don’t know about!
Sounds like a no brainer, but I’ve had people try to tell me that if something is a good idea, everyone else will just maaagically know about it and start buying. Uh, noooo. It doesn’t work like that! So, tell EVERYONE! Social media is a great tool to do just that.
“It’s time consuming.”
Nope. It doesn’t HAVE to be time-consuming!
If you only have time to post once a week, then post once a week! If you only have time to use only 1 social media outlet effectively, then stick to one!
That’s actually a better idea than trying to use ALL the social media all at once. If you’re trying to post to Instagram AND Facebook AND Pinterest AND Twitter AND Youtube AND Tik Tok AND Snapchat AND Tumblr AND Reddit AND Linkedin AND–
(Okay let me stop. I think I got stress hives just from typing that…)
Anyway! What I’m saying is, sticking to 1 or 2 social media platforms is perfectly fine! Just as long as you’re using social media and using it consistently. Just go at a pace that works best for you.
“It’s for kids”
Ahem. I object. 👩🏾⚖️
Did ya know that about 70% of adults in the US use some kind of social media? (Source: Pew Research Center)
Clearly, it’s not just for kids. Even though it seems like all the young people are pioneering the dance crazes and weird challenges, there is still PLENTY of space for adults.
People turn to social media for mental health tips, creative ideas, informing purchasing decisions, and way more. Don’t discount this amazing promotional tool for your business just yet!
“It’s for fun, not business.”
Sure, people use social media for fun…but you know what’s also fun? Connecting with a brand you LOVE.
Personally, I follow ice cream companies and cake decorators because it’s fun to see all the cool flavors and designs they come up with. But when I’m suddenly craving a nice scoop of ice cream or I’m at a point in my life where I need a perfectly designed cake for my wedding, I’ll know exactly where to look. And they’re already in my Instagram feed!
So let me tell you something about myself: I’m a web designer. NOT a social media manager.
So you’re probably wondering why I keep going on and on about social media, right?
Because when you have a website, you can’t just let it sit there and collect dust on the internet. You have to tell people about it! What’s a great way to communicate to a massive audience of people? Social media!
So many business owners get stuck because they don’t understand why people aren’t just running to their website to work with them just because their website simply EXISTS.
But let this professional web designer tell you, that’s absolutely NOT how it works! Your website works best when you can funnel people TO IT.
Like I said, you need to TELL SOMEONE!! In fact, tell everyone! Tell your mom, tell your cousin, tell your friends, tell your friend’s friends, tell whoever sits next to you on the bus. The only way your idea is gonna catch on is if you spread it around like the plague.
And like I said before, social media is an excellent, FREE way to promote your business to like-minded people who need your services.
Here are a few statistics to paint a picture:
(Source: Optinmonster)
Soooo basically, if you’re not already on social media, GET ON IT. And don’t just use it to post pictures of your dog. (No matter how cute Fluffy may be) Focus on a couple social media outlets and PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE.
Talk about your service, describe your service, educate people about your industry, post testimonials about your service, post memes relating to your service, sell your service.
And don’t forget to link back to your website! (People sometimes forget this part)
When you promote on social media, you connect with real people and present yourself as a real person. And when those real people realize how much they actually like you, they can click the link to your website to learn more about your business, and eventually drop money on you.
Okay! Now that you have a better understanding of the value of social media promotion for your website, ask yourself: Is your website optimized to actually convert those visitors into customers?
If you’re not sure, I’ve got just what you need.
